Remember, if you are competing in the Open, you need to submit a scorecard before you leave class. Scorecards should have your name, the name of your judge, your score, and the WOD (Open WOD #1). You must then enter your score on the Crossfit Games website, and we will validate your score.
Please be sure to review the above video for movement standards and guidelines.
Workout 12.1
Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes of:
Burpees
This workout begins from the standing position. The Athlete will move from flat on the ground to touching an object with both hands that is 6 inches above their max reach. Score is total reps completed.
Movement Standards
Burpee
At the bottom position, the Athlete’s chest and hips must touch the ground. At the top of the movement, both hands must make contact with the target 6 inches above your max reach.
Additional Notes
The height of the target must be no less than 6 inches above the Athlete’s fingertips when they are standing, feet together, with a straight line through their wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip and knees. The Athlete should be shrugging their shoulders and reaching as high as possible, while the measurement is being made.
If the Athlete touches with just one hand or misses, they may re-jump to complete the rep without dropping back to the ground. The use of a springy floor is not allowed.

Fortunately I cherry picked the **** out of the last burpee heavy wod
February 22nd, 2012 on 8:31 pm
If only this had been jump for height. It would have fulfilled Aaron’s dream of watching Matzner fail at the endeavor.
February 22nd, 2012 on 8:33 pm
I will say it again. Sadly, Yes, this is awesome!
Look at it this way, given our 100 burpee WOD a few days ago, we should all have a good benchmark of where we will stand with this one!

Cons: Burpees.

where does one buy a ‘springy floor’?
February 22nd, 2012 on 9:22 pm
Is it tacky to wear the ‘buck furpees’ t-shirt to this wod?
February 22nd, 2012 on 9:24 pm
Big Cat, you ain’t seen nothing yet. I have it on a good authority that wod 12.2 will be a 15 min amrap of jumping jacks, and wod 12.3 will be a 30 min amrap of ring rows.
February 22nd, 2012 on 9:24 pm
Watched the video. Am concerned because I don’t have a special Crossfit ™ indoor workout beanie that I wear even when it is warm and sunny outside. Will my score still count even without the required hipster d-bag headgear?
February 22nd, 2012 on 9:25 pm
Sorry Louis….the beanie looks good on you though….

@Twonita, gauntlet seen, and accepted…bitch.
@PAIDOFFJUDGE I just want to tell whoever is my counter tomorrow (Mickey), I just need to have 1 more burpee than Rybear, hint, hint.
February 22nd, 2012 on 10:24 pm
This blog really needs a “Like” function for comments.
February 22nd, 2012 on 10:32 pm
Twon, I don’t think you are allowed to throw a “gauntlet down” for a burpee workout. Heavy DLs, check…bench press, check…burpees…not so much.
See, my bicep concentration curl WOD doesn’t look so bad now.
February 22nd, 2012 on 10:34 pm
TJ – well played, but I think the appropriate Rocky sound track for this WOD is “No Easy Way Out” from Rocky IV.
See link for video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eij5IGNNcc
February 22nd, 2012 on 10:47 pm
Louis Kim, let’s have a little wager.
If I do more burpees than you, you must post at least once a day on the blog, and you must end all your posts with “All Praise To Antwone, the premier short chocolate god of the universe”.
February 22nd, 2012 on 10:48 pm
oh and Pete, I’ll be challenging you on those too!!!
February 22nd, 2012 on 11:44 pm
I want to do this wod, but I just gave up burpees for lent. What am I to do?
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:12 am
Just got 106….it doesn’t get too awful until about 4.5 mins in. Definitely redoing this weekend to get at least 5 more!
February 23rd, 2012 on 5:42 am
Sean C., “No Easy Way Out” = Most under-rated song ever…
February 23rd, 2012 on 5:45 am
This is going to be terrible, but notice we have been practicing burpees a little more regularly?
First, everyone can still sign up for the open. And this is proof everyone is Rxd.
Second, 100 seems like a nice round respectable number.
Third, I am the only one that will dnf. If you watched the video where Kristin puts her arm over her he’s to measure distance … I can’t do that.
I went to bed before the WoD came out last night. The result was that I just dreamed about it all night. Obviously, AMRAP burpees was not what I had imagined.
See you all this afternoon!
February 23rd, 2012 on 5:48 am
Also, everyone should post their strategies and thoughts on this. Slow steady work? Intervals? Go out hard and hang on? Snake up? Step down?
Give us the intel!
February 23rd, 2012 on 6:02 am
Aaron, I believe the strategy is to go fast and don’t take breaks. At least that’s what Coach Wilson says.
February 23rd, 2012 on 6:14 am
I think the strategy is just to bet Antwone that you can do better than him….history has shown that he normally loses when bet against…(I wont be betting Antwone)
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:09 am

Went out fast the first minute, and then faded. I think a steady pace would have been better.
Touching the ring wasn’t to bad, but some folks did have some “no-reps” when they missed with one or both hands. But if you are the right height, people who used the bar as a target said that was better because they didn’t have to look up each time to find the target.
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:14 am
72
Yuck
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:16 am
@John F. what height is the “right height” for the bar?
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:31 am
71. Looking up to find the ring was dizzying.
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:40 am
Mike & Sean, if people don’t like the song that allowed Rocky to end the Cold War, they can move to Canada. It’s 4:25 long, so if it is played back-to-back, we can hear it for the whole WOD.
Just a thought…
February 23rd, 2012 on 7:53 am
Andrewlath – the target has to be at least 6″ above your fingertips with your arm held up. If you are tall, I don’t think any of the bars are high enough. To short and all of them may be more than 6″ up.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:01 am
87.
Slow and steady worked well for me but I had 4 no reps from missing the rings. My advice take the extra half a second to make sure you hit those suckers. The jump made it harder and looking up to touch the rings made me dizzy. Almost had a pukie moment.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:05 am
84, great job 630!

February 23rd, 2012 on 8:17 am
120, I second Catelyn, great job 0630! Some of our athletes are going to shatter this and end up in the 130s or 140s. Get ‘em this afternoon!
Strategy: Brian has a great warm up on the board. DO IT! Warm up the Piriformis with the F4 stretch and do the wall quad stretch. Get your self as loose as possible. Finally, slow and steady wins the race. You have to find your comfort level without burning out. Once you burn out, you waste too much time and mentally you can’t get back on the horse. For me, I was probably steady at about 75%-80% output for the whole time. I stayed steady between 15-20 reps per minute.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:19 am
80.
Came out the gate a little too fast, then broke it up into groups of 10 till I got to 50 and then took it down to groups of 5.
1 Down, 4 to go!
One thing that may help:
If you’re using a ring, but an x or something on the floor beneath it so that you have some idea where it is. I found it very disorienting having to look up after every rep.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:35 am
Workout 12.1 – Proof that EVERYONE can do the Open.
Also the most boring AMRAP ever. To do AND to watch.
Had nasty flashbacks of last year’s Week 4 60 lateral bar burpee marathon. zzzzzzzzz
Honestly, I was more excited that I could do the 400m Run warmup while talking to Loren and not feeling like my chest was going to explode afterwards. Thanks Loren for the pacing and conversation.
First MetCon in months.
67 Rx.
Did this one steady. Limiting factor was my brain more than my arms or cardio. Set my target number a bit too low (50).
BTW – Ms. Christy 0530 SMOKED this
She also went steady.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:37 am
Louis K, don’t listen to their advice. I think for you, you should come out the gate as fast as you can. Then take a break 30 seconds into it for 30 seconds. Then repeat the cycle.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:38 am
Finally, a games workout I can dominate…that plays right into my strengths!
Agreed about slow and steady…when I did the 100 burpees, I broke it out into sets of 10 with a quick (quick by my definition) break every 10 reps. I think I will forgo the break and just try to stay in the aforementioned 80% zone…which for me is around 12-15 per minute. 100 is my goal but I think jumping to the rings will create some problems.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:39 am
I know I have to jump to grab onto the bars along the wall….hopefully they are 6 inches above my fingertips
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:46 am
84
I used the MU rings. If I were doing it again, I would have set both rings to the correct height instead of just one. I missed about 4 or 5 reps because I missed the ring with one hand. That also would have saved me time from having to reposition myself after every couple of reps.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:46 am
Only got to watch about half of this before the WOD, but others might find it useful: http://gymnasticswod.com/content/burpee-skill-transfer-pt6
For me, I got 70. I didn’t get to do the 100 burpee workout the other day, so I don’t have much frame of reference.

Also, the sport of fitness has truly arrived. Nothing says “spectator sport” like watching people do burpees for 7 minutes.

Thanks for great counting and motivation Kristin and Megan!
My goal was 10 reps a minute; I came out of the gate super fast and then worked towards 5 reps at a time. Definitely loosen up your quads! Mine started to burn out halfway through.
February 23rd, 2012 on 8:57 am
@Mike PCF, Did you go down one leg at a time or both?
@Catelyn, This means you are signing up for the open, right?
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:13 am
Awesome work 0630! No burpees for me – subbed 15 squats and 15 push presses @35#. 6+10
Thanks Kristin and Mary for the motivation.

87 – Simultaneously looking up at rings and swallowing mouth vomit was a challenge.
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:28 am
82…started out too fast, and expended energy and time locating and positioning myself under the ring (even with chalking the floor for positioning). If you can use the bars or even the wall, maybe consider that since you might be able to blindly touch the 6″ mark…
Great job, MikePCF!
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:35 am

I could not go fast from the start because I had to look/seek/find the rings in the blinding light at every leap.
I also could not go fast from the start because frankly I have no fast in me.
I tend to fall into that stupid mutt category of I’ll just keep going (albeit dang slow) until someone tells me to stop.
So, if your height works for the bar, that sounds like the best bet. I think I took an ok number of breaks, but I think those breaks might have been a bit too long. I was planning for 70, so I was happy with 76, but once I had 76, I then beat myself up for not getting 80. Dagnabit. I hate self loathing.
@SparklyWendy, if by “smoked” you mean “gassed”, then yes that is sorta how it looked.
Thanks for not falling asleep while counting!
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:45 am
Aaron, I was two legs for the first 30 or so, but they were still slow. Rick P was pretty consistent with two legs. After about 30, I still wasn’t a slow, drop one leg at a time, but I had some quickness behind my one leg at a time. Probably why my right quad locked up after the workout. My left leg went back first everytime.
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:50 am
89 – good job to my paatnas n’ crime this morning – ryan s and henry s
Suggestion: try a few burpees beforehand and get a pace. for the first bit until you hit the initial wall around 40 or 50 go a bit above the pace. when you hit that initial wall go back to your pace and then balls to the wall for the last minute.
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:52 am
Mike would currently be ranked 22nd in the world if he put his score in.
Bump @Monique’s video link!
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:54 am

That is great work, Mike.
I’m aiming for being tied at 353rd with 70…
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:58 am
I did consider approaching this WOD as you would a
2K m row: quickly build pace, set a rhythm for a while, go hard in the middle, go back to your pace, then go hard at the end. Something to consider…
February 23rd, 2012 on 10:08 am
78. Definitely paced this and concentrated on being efficient by pulling feet as close to hands as possible vs feet 1/2 way to hands & then another step to stand up straight, then jump. Took a few reps to get oriented to jumping and hitting a target … clearly there is no precision in my usual burpee game.
February 23rd, 2012 on 10:11 am
You win Aaron and Wilkins. I’m registered and entered…

Coached this early this morning and will run another session this afternoon. One of girls got 100, which for right now ranks her at #1 for South Central. She started CrossFit 1 month ago. She held a steady pace the entire time.
Our biggest challenge was the video taping, which obviously you guys don’t have issues with. It was a huge pain getting everything in the shot that needed to be in it (timer, judge, athlete’s hips and chest.)
Will be doing this Saturday AM at CrossFit Newport Beach. I’m mainly in it for the Potluck afterwards.
February 23rd, 2012 on 10:40 am
Any recommendations for a Boston (downtown) box? I’ll be staying near Boston Commons for a long weekend.
February 23rd, 2012 on 10:44 am
@Antwone I read Marks Daily Apple that Twinkies helps burpee performance, so I’m going to buy some, I’d be happy to share…BTW If I win you have to post everywhere that you post (all 1000 social forms of social media) “Sonic Soft Car Wash is the best car wash ever” after every post. This will be better than groupon.
@Liz, thanks will do my best.
@Rybear, I noticed the Happy Ying rooting for me, and not the Salty Yang of casa de Bear.
February 23rd, 2012 on 11:05 am
So excited!
So I was thinking should I go slow or steady, or should I gun it from the start. After extensive research this is the method I’ve decided to take to knock out this 7 minutes in heaven:

February 23rd, 2012 on 11:24 am
Antwone – I saw at least a dozen no reps in that video. Not sure thats the most sound strategy.
Louis – do yourself a favor and practice counting to 150 a few times today in preparation for being my judge.
February 23rd, 2012 on 11:26 am
Strategy Recommendation: Don’t die.
Anything over 70 is gravy.
I guess me and Chesley were the only ones happy to see this? Not that I’m good at it, just that it doesn’t require a lot of thought, I can do RX, and it’s over in 7 minutes.
February 23rd, 2012 on 11:40 am

I’m feeling like a solid pace of 85%ish then turn it up for the last 1:30. Im going for the unable move/breath at the end. Breaks are not an option. That’s the strategy at the moment.
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:29 pm
so I’m not doing the open. I’m trying to push some heavy loads around… is the open wod the only wod per day? can I still come to the gym? is this thing on?
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:32 pm
Patrick – just drink a gallon of milk before coming in to do the burpees. you’ll be pushing heavy loads all over the place.
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:33 pm
@Grant F. Breaks are an option. For proof you are welcome to observe our resident Break professional, Guch, or slightly less dedicated understudy, me. No charge.
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:35 pm
Wendy, it was my pleasure. We gotta stay strong in the face of the pro-burpee promoters like Chesley and Dan
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:40 pm
Ugh… this is like having Fran belly all day… except I know my Fran is usually done way before the 7 min mark. So this is worse.
Masochistically looking forward to this at 1830… between now and then I’m going to pick a target and then figure out what my pace will be to maintain throughout.
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:49 pm
12 reps RX.
Started strong then decided to turn it into a 45 second AMRAP.
February 23rd, 2012 on 12:55 pm

February 23rd, 2012 on 1:00 pm
Coaches: Just curious, when will Patriot be validating our scores so they appear on the games site leader boards (I’ve entered my score, but it says it won’t show on the site until the affiliate “validates” it.)
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:04 pm
@ Loren- Dont’ be misguided by my promotion for burpees. We have a love/hate relationship with each other. In thought they’re easy to deal with, in practice I want to spit in their face!
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:06 pm
Dan PCF,
Thank you for bringing up the rest strategy. I’ve seen the standards video but it doesn’t seem to address the rest options available to athletes.
Aaron PCF,
My strategy is to sprint to 50 burpees from the start than take long breaks between single reps. Whether or not I end up with 121 burpees at the end of 7 minutes solely depends on how I rest during my breaks.
Is it acceptable to use a 24″ box during the WOD for sitting? If you think that’s too obvious how about the nearest stack of plates?
If I get a negative response I’ll have to stick with the good old, “hands on the knees” rest.
Once I have a handle on how to rest in between reps, I will have further questions on how to rest during a rep.
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:13 pm
Aaron/Erika
Just signed up late (encouraged by a WOD that I can actually do Rx’d). Let me know if I don’t show up on your latest Patriot Team sheet.
Thanks,

We get points for presentation on the Score Card right? I may not be the best crossfitter around, but I’m crafty as S&*t and will totally dominate that portion.

@Dave I’ll try it. Vitamin D milk obviously.
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:25 pm
@Ellie: PLEASE give Mel a BIG hug from me. I miss those guys!!! And good luck to you out there. :0)
After looking over last year’s WODs with some friends we figured it’d be burpees (lucky guess)… so I tapered appropriately but I’m still having issues getting excited about laying down and standing up for 7 minutes… YaY burpees…
For a strategy I look at it this way. If you have a goal number then break that down to how many you want to accomplish each minute. This will also keep you from starting out too fast (common mistake on a WOD like this when it “matters”, but really, it’s just another WOD–Compete like you Train, and Train like you Compete). As the time wears down you should be able to pick up speed based on where you are in your goal, how you are feeling and time left. Regardless of how tired you are, and how bad you want to quit, when you think you have hit rock bottom and can’t do one more, drop and do it anyway!!! Now is not the time to hold back guys. Go get’em!!
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:32 pm
Been off the blog awhile (and WODs for that matter) due to hurt back.
What time can we make this up on Sunday’s? Regularly scheduled WODs or other?
Can’t really do it, but may try to just log 1 to avoid DNF
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:34 pm
73. With the exception of my first marriage, that was the worst way to spend 7 minutes.
February 23rd, 2012 on 1:37 pm
Not happy. Was really hoping to just grind out 10 a minute and get to 70. Went off a cliff at the 5 minute mark and ended up with a 66. How old do I have to be to qualify by the Champions division so I can at least be humilated by guys closer to my age?

February 23rd, 2012 on 2:52 pm
Jeff C, I will be at Fest the same weekend, and usually Dr. J (Jeff J. 2) goes down as well…given that all of us will be down there, I have to figure the Mid-Atlantic will just move to the Fairgrounds at that point. We can set up shop between the stalls for the Boudin Balls and Crawfish Monica. Mango freezes for all after.

Matt R – good point. I was a bit stressed about it. Crawfish monica sounds like great pre-regional WOD fuel for the body.
February 23rd, 2012 on 2:56 pm
Liz – I was wearing my Club MWB shirt and then immediately went back to clean and jerking after those horrendous 45 seconds mercifully came to an end.
February 23rd, 2012 on 3:13 pm
Who would have guessed that burpees would generate over 100 comments…
February 23rd, 2012 on 3:35 pm
No pacing for twon. I’m gunning it, pressing the gas, and driving this short car right over the fucking cliff. I mean whose to say Thelma and Louise didn’t survive that dive. The film ended before we could find out:

Three things:
One, I have to go through the score cards and or talk to the judges generally before I validate, so there might be a slight delay. I have until Tuesday at 8pm to get them all in, but they may trickle on the board as I do them.
Two, everyone who did this Rxd today should sign up!
Three, this is who I have on the team so far.

Solid 46 over at Crossfit Walter Reed.
My strategy of start slow, take a couple breaks, and finish with a whimper paid off.
February 23rd, 2012 on 4:38 pm
95 – had a shot at 100 but wheels came off on rep 93. My strategy was to shoot for a consistent average of 15/min or 105 total to try to get to 100….came out a little fast and then slowed but it helped to know where I should be minute by minute. I was just ahead (51 or 52) at the 1/2way mark…and was able to catch up in minute five when I fell behind by a few reps.
This ends up feeling like level of effort is increasing the whole time…say start at 75%, 85% at half-way and felt like 100% at then end even though I was going slower.
February 23rd, 2012 on 4:40 pm
@Mark McGinn – solid.
@Manza – we should compare notes on which brand of weightbelt and knee wraps are optimal for this WOD.
I’m listening to Paramore now to start getting psyched for Saturday at DCF. Going to try not to be last.
February 23rd, 2012 on 5:23 pm
Measured out the inches but didn’t take a video or anything – 83. Not nearly as bad as I thought. Knees were getting a little bumped up.

Came out guns hot, which ended up hurting me in the end. Missed the target once or twice which probably cost me 1 or 2 more reps. A good pace from beginning to end is the strategy if I ever have to do this again (and I pray I don’t).

Good times
February 23rd, 2012 on 6:53 pm
Came out way too hot for my first WOD in a week… The result was being basically out of gas at 5 minutes. 58. NOT HAPPY. This will be improved upon.

Great energy at the 1630 and some awesome efforts.
The new standard definitely took some getting used too..

Right now I’m 27th in the world for my age group, down from 25th. I think I’ll quit checking now.

66 Satan Kisses. I survived, but that number sucks. Overall results: Indifference

Grace Ann, good meeting you face to face today. 80 is a solid score, congrats.

89. Good times at the 1730. Thanks to Timmy T for counting / encouraging.
For anyone contemplating doing this again, I can tell you that a stationary target where you don’t have to look up and aim makes a big difference – thanks to Johnny for that tip.
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:19 pm
94. Actually had good strategery for this one. Think if I did it again, I could find 6 reps over 7 minutes now that I have a score to shoot for. however, I will not be doing this again
February 23rd, 2012 on 9:48 pm
74. Breaking it up into sets of 10 helped me a lot.

100. Thank goodness Jen N was shouting in my face, or else I might not have hung on. Might have to try a second time – gunning for Pam and Tes in the over 100 category. But if I don’t make it, pretty stoked to get 100.
Some great efforts today – thanks to everyone for their cooperation. As Aaron said, it’ll take us a little bit to get through the cards and validate scores, but will get it done ASAP.
I you plan on making up/ re-doing on Sunday, please shoot me an email for planning purposes. ,
February 24th, 2012 on 12:01 am
103: I felt good about this score until I saw it didn’t even put me in the top 100 two days before the competition. Oh well, I don’t specialize in burpees anyway…
Thanks Kassi for counting/judging me. Team Tassi Rocks!!!
February 24th, 2012 on 6:24 am
91. Not great and I actually felt like I was doing ok. I will try again and see what happens.
February 24th, 2012 on 7:42 am
93. Thanks RJP.com and Mollie Keith for your motivation. Used one ring based on Mollie’s suggestion and it wasn’t bad even though I can’t really compare to using the bar!
Great work 1830!! Good seeing everyone!

Thanks Rick S for monitoring the time and keeping me on pace. Will need to dig a little deeper to cross the 100 threshold on Saturday.

91 on Saturday with Kevin scoring – slow and steady strategy. Should’ve kicked into high gear with a minute left.
February 25th, 2012 on 3:43 pm
80, thanks for the push John!
