Notes
This workout begins from a standing position and with the barbell loaded with the starting weight. In the Burpee, the Athlete will move from flat on the ground to touching an object with both hands that is at least 6 inches above their max reach. In the Snatch, the barbell goes directly from the ground to overhead in one motion without stopping at the shoulders. This can be a muscle Snatch, a power Snatch, a squat Snatch or a split Snatch. A Clean and Jerk is not permitted. Score is total reps completed. In the case of a tie, the Athlete with the faster time to finish their last complete set of Snatches will be ranked higher.
Special Tiebreak
In this workout, we are using a special tiebreak method. At the end of each round of 30 Snatches, time should be marked. Specifically, as soon as the 30th Snatch at 75 pounds for men is complete, time should be marked. As soon as the 30th Snatch at 135 pounds is complete, time should be marked. The same at the 30th rep at 165 pounds, if you get there. When you submit your final result, your score will be the number of reps completed. There will be another field in which you will enter the time of the last completed sets of Snatches, whichever that may be.
Note: All tiebreak times must be reported in elapsed time, not in time remaining. If you are using a countdown timer, you must convert to elapsed time before reporting your score. For this reason, it is recommended that you set your clock to count up.
Movement Standards
Burpee
The height of the target must be no fewer than 6 inches above the Athlete’s fingertips when they are standing, feet together, with a straight line through their wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip and knees. The Athlete should be shrugging their shoulders and reaching as high as possible while the measurement is being made. If the Athlete touches with just one hand or misses, they may re-jump to complete the rep without dropping back to the ground. The use of a springy floor is not allowed.
Snatch
Each rep will be counted once the Athlete clearly shows control of the barbell overhead. Pressing out the arms at the top to complete the movement is allowed as long as the barbell does not touch the shoulders or head. The Athlete must be responsible for loading their own barbell to the appropriate weights during the workout. The same barbell must be used for the entire workout, and the Athlete may not receive assistance when changing the loads. Using additional pre-loaded barbells is not permitted.

Guys in the evening classes – please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to warm up. We’ll need to run two heats so that each person has a counter, and this is a 17 minute WOD, so we’ll need the entire hour to make sure we can get through it.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Hugs,
esmj

Thanks to coach Zak for reminding me to try the split. Made a huge difference.

My goal was to get through the burpees and attempt 100# snatch at least once. Ergh! I may attempt a re-do but there is nothing exciting about redoing a burpee/snatch ladder.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:58 am
Two years in a row they make this giant leap in snatch weight between rounds one and two. They didn’t notice that 60% of the people who did 12.2 last year tied at 30 reps?
Not a complaint, just an observation.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:02 am
Can we still sign up?
March 7th, 2013 on 8:08 am
Luke- I think you have till Sunday to sign up. You may want to double check me on that though(crossfit.com- click on the games link). Sign up!! Do it, just do it!!
Casto- It’s all part of their master plan
. Work ‘yo split snatch ‘yo!
March 7th, 2013 on 8:15 am
149 rxd (15:10). So close to 150 goal with 1 burpee to go. Hate the prospect of possibly doing it again. Maybe.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:41 am
103 rx’d. Since I didn’t get any snatches at 75# last year, my goal was to get at least one, and I got three, so that’s happy. In retrospect though I wish I’d paced myself better on burpees so I didn’t have to sandbag so much later. Dropping under the bar continues to be a confidence issue for me, so I’ll just try to hammer away at it.
Big ups to Elisa, who knocked it out of the park…
March 7th, 2013 on 8:57 am
13.1 = 113
That was fun. Happy that I got 135# up 13 times.Back was feeling it for sure though. Reinforces my slow but sure progress in weight.

Very impressive Jon. A little bit of jealousy on my part.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:07 am
13.1: 101 (tiebreak time: 6:44)
Nine attempts at 135# before finally getting 1 rep 10 seconds before the end of time. New snatch PR, so there’s that.
Guys were having great results from the split snatch, which I had never tried before. 135 is not the weight for me to try something new with.
Amazing energy in the gym at 0530, and some truly Herculean efforts from all the regulars. Sorry, but if you don’t get juiced for this stuff, I don’t get it.
Finally, awesome job handling the madness, Brian and Mollie!
March 7th, 2013 on 9:08 am
Rock on Monique!
101.
That was the ugliest damn squat snatch ever. Nearly comical. But since it was also my 3rd ever at 75#, I am über happy with it. Not surprisingly,
I didn’t get a sinlgle one at 75# last year, and that ladder didn’t have 70 burpees in it. So, it’s a win.
Good luck y’all!
March 7th, 2013 on 9:08 am
Jon W, super nice!
March 7th, 2013 on 9:08 am
151.
Ideally would have liked to have gotten to the 100# snatches a little sooner so I had more attempts. Thanks to Mollie for the “encouragement” on the burpees and Mary, Ande, and Judy for the push on the 100#.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:12 am
Hey Folks,
late notice, but grabbing drinks tomorrow (Friday) evening to celebrate my last year of being 30 something. Please come out if you are around. Invite anyone you like. Also, Laura, Natasha, Kevin, and some asshole named Jared also have early March b-days and will be out and about. If you hate me, come say hello to them
I’m doing dinner before hand but should be at the bar around 9:15pm-ish.
Where: Arlington Rooftop (I know…it’s not Lyon or Liberty)
When: 9:15pm
Pete
Oh, and let me tell you how excited I am about burpees! Really plays to my lift heavy/no metcon strengths.

122rx’d (16:58)
Great job 5:30!
Thanks Monique! I was chasing Chesely (awesome job, lady!!) and for the record, I will not be re-doing any part of that workout. Hope to never cross paths with it again.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:16 am
13.1 = 128
Burpees suck. Think I might have left my wrist wraps under the pull-up bars to the right of the computer. Glad I followed the anti-theft policy and put my name on them. If anybody finds wraps with “D. Hale” then please let me know.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:35 am
13.1: 100 rx’d (6:51)
Spent the last 7 minutes or so flailing around trying to snatch 135. (old PR is 125, so I thought I might have a chance, but no luck.)
March 7th, 2013 on 9:43 am
13.1 = 150 (14:56)
I wanted a chance at 100# snatch, but was gassed from sprinting out of the gate. I did get extra plates on one side of the bar though. PACE YOURSELF!
Thanks for the push Kristin and Brian!
March 7th, 2013 on 10:16 am
Thanks, Jeff and Antwone, it comes with the territory of now being officially a “Master” according to Crossfit HQ’s more generous Old Age definition (without any relief on the WOD)…
Lessons learned from WOD:
Use tape on thumbs for snatches. I did and my thumbs are fine; others didn’t and I saw a lot of tears, including trying to tape mid-WOD.
Also, this is not a burpees race. It is definitely about sustained effort over a fairly long time. Keep a reasonable pace so you have the energy/strength to keep making forward progress.
Good luck!
March 7th, 2013 on 10:24 am
@Casto: did you not notice that this is pretty much 12.1 + 12.2 from last year? CF gets a D for creativity in my book
March 7th, 2013 on 10:43 am
I did, Tes. I guess that’s why Castro gets paid the big bucks…
March 7th, 2013 on 11:33 am
Second announcement: makeup for this WOD for people doing the Open goes Sunday at 1200. Contact Erika with any questions.
March 7th, 2013 on 11:42 am
118. had a 1RM yesterday at 72#, so to hit 75# a number of times…exhilarating!
March 7th, 2013 on 11:58 am
13.1: 100 (tiebreak 7:06). 3 failed attempts to snatch 135. I just did 1rm of 120 yesterday.
March 7th, 2013 on 12:05 pm
Scott Panchik is on top of the leaderboard with 194. He did 210# snatch four times last night before time expired.
March 7th, 2013 on 12:41 pm
So proud of the 6:30 crew!!! Judy…way to go lady, and I am so glad you signed up! Kristin..rock star..way to get the 100!
When people ask “why do you do crossfit?” I think a lot of us are in the same boat; we aren’t Annie T or Rich Froning, this isn’t our “full time job” and we want to be healthy, be strong, have fun, and look good naked:) Crossfit is a lot like life; there are days when an athlete is on top of the world, dominating a specific WOD, and there are other days the athlete shows up, and gets crushed and humbled. If you are a person that always “has to win”- then don’t do crossfit….do a sport where the “competition” event is always the same, and predictable. Then you can know exactly how to train. For me, today definitely fell in to the “getting crushed/humbled” category… and that is okay;) Life won’t end, and it is so fun to get to sweat and work hard with a cool crew;) Bring it on for four more weeks… Go team:)!!
March 7th, 2013 on 1:03 pm
She we established new 1RM snatches yesterday. Today we have had several people BREAK the record they set yesterday because it was in the format and context of the Open. That is one of the reasons we encourage people to sign up.
Great job to everyone so far.
Please post your thoughts on strategy and mindset and anything else. I think Jon W is right. This is not a Burpee race, this is a snatch workout. As you do the Burpees you should be thinking about how you can do them to maximize your snatch. That means balancing doing them fast enough to give your self time with doing them slow enough to have plenty of energy.
March 7th, 2013 on 1:13 pm
151
Won our list in the first 40 burpees. I think I did those in a minute.
March 7th, 2013 on 1:25 pm
I would also like to thank the coaches for making the Open WOD our weekly Thursday WOD (and also making themselves available for makeups too). For me, it truly makes all the difference in whether I can participate in this kind of event.
Love seeing the scores coming in–so proud of everyone’s effort!
March 7th, 2013 on 1:28 pm
Yo, nice job, Brian Wilson. hitting that 165# seperates the elite from the ELITE.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:11 pm
Sheesh. Next announcement (may be the last…can’t promise anything). I’ve announced this in classes, but please make sure if you’re doing the Open, I get your scorecard at the end of class. YOU are responsible for submitting your score on your online profile, but I need the scorecard in order to validate. You have until Sunday at 5pm to submit.
BREAK BREAK. If you’re reading all the excited posts and think “man, I wish I had signed up….”, there is still time! Sign ups are open until the close of the first WOD. C’mon – you know you want to.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:18 pm
Erika, Ben– Sorry that I had to bail. Thanks for understanding. Had to get my eyes checked.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:19 pm
150 (16:44)
holy crap was that aweful.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:26 pm
wait i misunderstood the tie breaker 150 (15:01) i finished the wod in 16:44.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:27 pm
111. That was soul-crushingly disappointing.
The burpees hurt more than normal- that little jump is a doozy when done 40, then 30 times. I’m glad I told myself I wouldnt open the thin mints in the freezer until after this was over, or I’d be 2 boxes in by now.
March 7th, 2013 on 2:36 pm
@Becca — Wow. Rio and I are wicked impressed!
March 7th, 2013 on 3:13 pm
123 (4:40 tiebreaker)
That took more of a toll on me then I thought, and earlier than I thought. Pace on the burpees….make sure you keep GOOD form on the snatches especially when they get heavier and make sure to use the hook grip, it helps.
This is a hard WOD I watched the demo last night and could tell it was taking a toll on Bailey and Panchik.
March 7th, 2013 on 4:35 pm
128(4:49)….a little disappointed since I missed 3times at 135, a little better focus and I could have gotten back to the next set of burpees
Awesome job Brian + Ben hitting the 151.
The twins + I will vouch for Becca’s score…honestly, she made it look pretty easy with a slow steady approach.
March 7th, 2013 on 6:20 pm
100 (4:57)
Went out a bit fast on the first set of Burpees, but I knew I wouldn’t finish the round of 135 Snatches, so was shooting for a descent tie break at 75 time. Had 8:30 to attempt a 135 snatch, but couldn’t get it.
40 Burpees: 2:31; 30 Snatches (75): 4:57; 30 Burpees: 8:22
March 7th, 2013 on 6:55 pm
101. Tie breaker 8:06.
My goal for the past year has been to get at least 1 rep at 135 if the snatch ladder came back. 70 burpees almost killed that dream. Feels good to accomplish it.
March 7th, 2013 on 6:57 pm
102. My goal was 101. Tiebreaker was 8:36 I think?
March 7th, 2013 on 7:25 pm
The way the scoring system works if you score bad in the first round you can’t make it up. I sucked last year in the burpee opener and crushed (for an old guy) the snatch in round 2. Didn’t matter.
This WOD would give me a chance to start in the top 50% world-wide in the old guy division simply because I can do some 135# snatch reps. Alas, I have a bacterial infection in my left index finger (doctor said something about people not wiping-down their bars) and don’t want to compete with an open wound and a finger that can’t bend. I’ll miss next week too.
Just kidding about the bar wiping. I got it somewhere else.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:25 pm
103 (6:58). I had to stop constantly during second rd of burpees to prevent my lunch from coming up. Now I know why I work out at 6:30 and 16:30–empty stomach
March 7th, 2013 on 7:25 pm
153 -13:18
Big ups to Molly and CMarty. Big time scores.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:33 pm
113. My 1 RM Snatch PR (set as of yesterday) was 70#. So to get 13 reps at 75# during the open was awesome and far beyond what I expected to achieve coming into the WOD. Mary, thanks for the push to sign up and Sarah – thanks for the encouragement today!
March 7th, 2013 on 7:43 pm
105 / 8:12. Hooray for the new masters division!
March 7th, 2013 on 7:46 pm
108 (7:08). No way I could have done that a year ago.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:48 pm
120. First post in a while because I’m excited that I was able to get 20 snatches @ 75#. Fun times.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:49 pm
127
Jeff C – thanks for coming out.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:52 pm
151 (13:44). Thanks for the support Kassi, Twon, ML, Adam, etc!!!
To be clear, we put down our actual judge’s name correct? Just want to be sure it’s not all attributed to someone who’s passed the judges course, as it currently seems to source from some database.
March 7th, 2013 on 7:56 pm
125
That was miserable. And Twon beat me so even that’s salt in the wound
March 7th, 2013 on 8:17 pm
104 (8:18)
Burpees man. So grim.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:17 pm
137…… One day I’ll be able to do burpees….
March 7th, 2013 on 8:20 pm
Mickey, 4 more open wods.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:30 pm
100 in 9:37
Tiebreaker at 6:04
March 7th, 2013 on 8:35 pm
135 – So are we able to try again if we want on Sunday, or does this score stand? So needed another 60 seconds to try and get 151. That one burned my lungs, but it sure was fun.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:43 pm
150. THat’s what I was aiming for.
Part of wants to know if I could have pushed a little bit harder and got that 151 tho.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:45 pm
100. Worked up to 130# on the snatch but couldn’t get it locked out at 135#. It’s still a 10# PR so I’m happy. Interestingly enough this is the second year in a row I PR’d on the snatch in the open.
March 7th, 2013 on 8:49 pm
114 – buck furpees!
March 7th, 2013 on 8:52 pm
150 – 15:51
Great job to everyone. Those who topped 150 have my admiration. Also, pretty sure Mollie K. blitzed by me on the second set of snatches.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:00 pm
Totally agree with what Mike C. Just said.
Mollie K & CMarty win the BAD-ASS-NESS award today for stellar performance.
So gangsta.
March 7th, 2013 on 9:05 pm
134 (16:43)
March 7th, 2013 on 9:08 pm
102, managed to somehow snatch 135 twice which is at least a 15# pr. I’ll take it.
Saw a lot of badass performances today, nice work!
March 7th, 2013 on 9:28 pm
110 (6:51). That’s 1 more burpee than lasts year AMRAP and 3 more snatches than last years’ ladder. I’m marking two in the win column for this one…
March 7th, 2013 on 10:08 pm
112 (6:15)
2 questions,
I went to upload my score but I could not find my judge in the judge list. What should I do?
If I want to try and get a better score, can I try again Sunday?
March 7th, 2013 on 10:09 pm
115 and 5:45
March 7th, 2013 on 10:31 pm
126 (5:00). Got to the135# snatch pretty quickly (around 7min) but quickly realized that getting through all 30 reps would be tough. I came close to getting back to the burpees … am tempted to try this again on Sun.
March 7th, 2013 on 10:32 pm
Thanks everyone for the support today and great job everyone! You all motivate me!
178 Rx’d
March 7th, 2013 on 10:39 pm
150. 14:30 tie breaker. Feeling pretty good for my first Crossfit Open WOD ever!
Thanks Drew for the encouragement; great working with you!
March 7th, 2013 on 10:40 pm
!) Makeup on Sunday. Yes, you can submit your score now, and if you beat it on Sunday, resubmit a different score. Totally legit.
2) Judges name (select from list) is a judge on our team. I took (and passed, you’re welcome) the judges course. If there’s a question/problem, list me, since I witnessed all your performances and will be validating them.
3) You guys made me very happy tonight. Good energy, lots of PRs, and you guys all gave it all you had. Awesome work.
March 7th, 2013 on 11:18 pm
Mollie K – wow, you’re awesome. No snark here.
